My Philosophy of Education
I have always had a passion for the visual arts. It started in grade school, developed through high school, was further fostered and refined as an undergraduate in college and in graduate school, and has been an integral part of my professional career for the past 25 years. I possess a strong background in the studio arts and have worked in a variety of situations ranging from graphic artist and photographer, to communications director, to teacher. I have designed numerous academic courses and have taught in a variety of situations ranging from pre-kindergarten to post high school. Besides my wide-ranging studio background, I have extensive knowledge of art history and feel that it is essential to teach to students of all ages. Art history enables students to gain a genuine appreciation for the visual arts and an understanding of their evolution. When art history and studio art are combined it makes for a well-rounded learning experience and adds validity to any art curriculum.
I originally got into education because I saw it as a means to pursue something in which I was very much interested, while also bringing home a paycheck every week. However, the further that I have become enmeshed into the system, the more I have seen the need for excellent teachers, particularly ones who can make learning stimulating, relevant, and meaningful. As a life-long learner myself, I am passionate about sharing knowledge with others and find no greater reward than seeing a student successfully accomplish a task because of my guidance and/or inspiration. There is a whole world of discovery and imagination in the visual arts. I am confident that I can bring this world, if only a few parts at a time, to life in the minds of my students.
